The challenge
Many local authorities and municipal utilities are converting their street lighting to LED technology. The reasons for this include better energy efficiency and a longer service life as well as attractive subsidy programmes and the exclusion of certain lighting technologies from the market.
Although LED technology has a lot of advantages, it has the disadvantage over older luminaire technologies that replacement costs for equipment are higher and that LEDs are more susceptible to surges.
In practice, overvoltages often damage several LED lights at once. The consequences can be partial or complete failure of the LED drivers, destruction of the LED controllers, reduced brightness or failure of the control electronics.
The solution
The EK 480 fuse box from Langmatz with the application-specific DEHNcord L 3P surge arrester masters these challenges.
Thanks to its high-quality workmanship, the fuse box is characterised by stability, safety and optimal installation options. Moreover, the transparent enclosure cover allows quick identification of the arrester status by means of the LED indicators.
There is the option of interrupting the LED street light circuit as soon as the surge arrester operates to visually indicate the need for maintenance. When integrating the DEHNcord L 3P surge arrester in the fuse box, great importance was attached to the ease of installation of the overall solution.
LEDs with high-quality electronics can thus be efficiently protected against surges resulting from switching operations or nearby lightning strikes.
