De bliksemstroom wordt via de vermaasde, onderling laagohmige aardingsinstallatie op gecontroleerde wijze over een groot oppervlak in de aarde verdeeld om de persoonlijke veiligheid te waarborgen en gevaarlijke overspanningen te reduceren. De voor mensen gevaarlijke stap- en contactspanning wordt door aanvullende potentiaalregeling in de ruimte waar mensen zich ophouden voorkomen.
